Elevated risk of anti-Israel protests in a number of countries
Given the recent events in the Middle East, RPS is advising travellers to be alert when moving around the region, as it is set to become more fractious and unstable in the coming weeks.
There is an higher risk of further pro-Palestine and anti-Israel demonstrations in countries across the globe over the near-term, specifically following Muslim midday prayers today, as well as in the coming days.
This is in response to the ongoing Israeli military operation against Gaza Strip-based militants. There have already been numerous pro-Palestine and anti-Israel protests in countries across the Middle East, Asia, parts of Africa, North America and South America, as well as in Europe, since the initiation of 'Operation Protective Edge' on 7 July.
It should be noted that there have been isolated incidents of low-level violence at some of these gatherings; further unrest is possible. The intensity and frequency of these gatherings may also increase further in the coming days in response to conflict developments, particularly on Fridays, a usual protest period in many Muslim countries.
Likely protester gathering points include the vicinity of Israeli diplomatic facilities or interests, or the embassies and consulates of countries closely affiliated or associated with Israel, such as the US.
A pro-Palestine demonstration is planned in the UK on 19 July; participants are expected to gather near Downing Street in London from 12:00 local time and then move to the Israeli Embassy on Kensington High Street for a rally.
In other countries pro-Israel rallies are also possible. All related demonstrations should be avoided as a precaution.
